Greer Relief: Joyce’s Story

Care

When Joyce’s grandchildren needed a home, she provided the care and stability they lacked. Like many families in Greenville, finding safe and affordable childcare can be a tremendous obstacle for a working parent or guardian.

This was the case for Joyce, and she eventually lost her employment due to the obligations and responsibilities of raising children again. The ripple effect depleted her savings, and she struggled to pay rent and buy food. On a weekly basis, Joyce was faced with the impossible choice of choosing between rent, utilities, food, medicine, and other basic necessities - a dilemma thousands of households in Greenville face. Desperate, Joyce found Greer Relief.

“Greer Relief heard my story and did not waste a moment,” shares Joyce.

Greer Relief immediately provided emergency assistance to meet her family’s needs. Next, they connected her with their RENEW (Reach Every Neighbor Every Way) Rewards Program, which seeks to provide education and skills to help counter the many stressors of poverty.

This program helped Joyce regain independence and taught her skills to create her own resume, set a monthly budget, and work toward financial stability, while also learning new job skills and healthy living practices.

“I’ve learned to do my own resume…and save [money] now,” Joyce says. “Greer Relief and the RENEW Rewards Program stepped up for me and my family, helping me more than you will ever know.”

Greer Relief believes “Every Neighbor Matters.” They are one of many partnerships the Greenville Homeless Alliance (GHA) relies on in its mission to end homelessness in Greenville. The GHA is committed to finding safe, affordable homes for all.
